What exactly is being compared?
The comparison concerns the boundary of supply coverage. One proposal includes defined capacity and transmission components within a fixed price; another fixes specified energy while leaving those components to an agreed method. Both still require review of volume, changes, delivery, and other exclusions.
The Pennsylvania fixed-and-variable resource introduces basic categories. A negotiated commercial product needs more detail. Request a written component map and ask whether all-in refers to supply only, specified taxes, or another explicitly stated boundary.
Use the contracts hub to review the full obligation. A price label is incomplete without the schedules and provisions that define when it applies and what can change. Management should approve the coverage it wants before comparing final executable numbers.
Which component map reveals the difference?
List included and excluded items across both offers, keeping their units and methods visible. A blank exclusion is not a zero amount. Ask the supplier to identify any adjustment rights that can affect components otherwise described as included.
| Component | Specified inclusive offer | Specified pass-through offer |
|---|---|---|
| Covered energy | Agreed fixed method | Agreed fixed method |
| Capacity | Included within stated boundary | Defined quantity and cost calculation |
| Transmission | Included within stated boundary | Defined network allocation and price |
| Other supply items | Check express exclusions | Check express exclusions |
| Delivery and taxes | Verify actual treatment | Verify actual treatment |
The table describes a comparison framework, not every supplier’s product. Use the actual agreement to populate it. If two suppliers interpret a charge differently, resolve that issue before claiming their headline rates describe the same purchase.
Why do account quantities need separate verification?
Capacity and transmission quantities can use different regional or utility allocation methods and effective periods. They may differ from current monthly billing demand. Obtain the source records rather than enter one generic peak value into both calculations.
The PJM guide to billing illustrates wholesale component calculations using relevant contributions and zonal treatment. It explains why location, units, and allocation matter. It does not by itself establish the hotel’s retail pass-through formula or a current quote.
Ask which quantities the supplier used for each service year, whether they are current records or estimates, and what happens after updates. A hotel adding charging or reopening rooms should also understand how operating changes interact with the pricing and volume provisions.
What calculation defines a useful break-even boundary?
Compare the incremental covered price with the total excluded components under matching assumptions. Suppose, only for illustration, annual use is 750,000 kWh. A fictional inclusive proposal is $0.104/kWh and an energy-only alternative is $0.096/kWh for its stated component.
The modeled inclusive amount is $78,000 and the energy-only amount is $72,000. Their difference is $6,000. Under those fictional assumptions, pass-through components totaling less than $6,000 would produce a lower modeled supply amount; a larger total would produce a higher one.
These inputs are not available rates, forecasts, or a recommendation. Delivery, taxes, other exclusions, and differences in contractual conditions are outside the illustration. The threshold is arithmetic under a defined boundary, not proof that future capacity or transmission costs will lie on either side of it.
How should scenarios show retained uncertainty?
Show several labeled assumptions rather than one invented precise forecast. Using the fictional $72,000 energy amount above, assumed excluded components of $4,000, $6,000, and $9,000 yield modeled totals of $76,000, $78,000, and $81,000. The inclusive fictional amount stays $78,000 for those modeled components.
The scenario range is illustrative, not a probability distribution or an estimate of actual system costs. Replace it with supported account-specific inputs where available. Explain any uncertainty that cannot be modeled credibly instead of assigning a convenient amount to make one structure look better.
The fixed-versus-variable comparison considers a separate price axis. A fixed-energy pass-through product can retain system-cost exposure even when energy itself is not indexed. Keep the two dimensions visible in the recommendation.
How do utility and supply boundaries interact?
Separate utility delivery from supplier components and check for overlap. The DOE utility-rate guidance distinguishes bundled and unbundled treatment. Its concepts help organize the review but do not determine a particular hotel’s invoice categories.
An apparently inclusive supply rate should not be credited with removing unchanged delivery. A separate transmission-related supplier item should not be counted again if it is already covered elsewhere under the actual arrangement. Read schedules and supporting calculations instead of allocating costs from their everyday names.
Accounting needs a clear expectation for the first bill. If a supplier presents adjustments later, record the reconciliation period and evidence required. A predictable initial invoice does not establish that a delayed pass-through or true-up cannot occur.
Which adjustment provisions can change the initial promise?
Read material change, change in law, volume, and other stated repricing rights. The document determines their effect. A fixed-inclusive price can have defined exceptions, while a pass-through product can have limits or conditions on the retained components.
Ask the supplier to apply relevant clauses to the hotel’s known operating plan. Management should understand whether a renovation, equipment addition, or account change affects the accepted coverage. Do not assume every fixed label carries identical protection or every separately priced component can change without supporting language.
Retain clarifications with the final agreement. If an explanation requires an amendment or revised schedule, complete it before execution. A spreadsheet assumption should not be relied upon to resolve a conflicting contractual provision.
What review sequence should guide the decision?
Qualify coverage first, then compare modeled cost and risk. The team should be able to explain which amount is known, which is assumed, and which obligation remains open. This creates a considered decision rather than a contest between the smallest displayed rates.
- Match meters, start dates, and service windows.
- Map every included and excluded component.
- Verify account quantities and effective periods.
- Request calculation sources, allocation, markup, and evidence.
- Compare a common forecast and break-even boundary.
- Test uncertainty and foreseeable operating changes.
- Review credit, adjustments, and compensation.
- Retain the selected schedules and invoice verification plan.
An unresolved cost method should remain an approval issue. If the hotel cannot administer it, management can seek another available structure rather than treat unfamiliarity as a reason to assume a favorable outcome.
How should broker compensation be recorded?
Request payer, amount or calculation, units, inclusion status, and service scope. Supplier-paid compensation can be embedded in the quoted rate or another defined component; separately agreed advisory amounts need their own treatment.
Ask whether the method varies between inclusive and pass-through proposals. Count embedded amounts once and compare estimated dollars on matching forecast and duration. The recommendation should describe the full economic arrangement while management decides how much uncertainty to retain.
What should management monitor after selection?
For an inclusive product, check its promised coverage and any allowed adjustments. For pass-through exposure, also verify assigned quantities, sources, calculations, timing, and supporting detail. Accounting should distinguish a change in volume from a change in a separately priced component.
Keep effective account records and operating updates accessible. The best fit is a structure the hotel understands, accepts, and can administer. The comparison should never imply that an all-in label fixes everything or that retained exposure is automatically cheaper because the initial energy number is smaller.
